Tom Patterson Case
In February 2016, the CPT was approached to help develop an emergency phage-based treatment for a patient in the ICU of the UC San Diego Medical Center with an intractable, pan-resistant Acinetobacter baumannii infection. In collaboration with the US Naval Medical Research Center and the Rohwer lab at San Diego State University, two phage cocktails were produced: one from the CPT laboratory and one from the US Naval Medical Research Center. These cocktails were administered over the following weeks and the patient, Tom Patterson, has since made a full recovery.
